Chevrolet launched the updated Tahoe with typical engines like V-8s and a diesel option. However, for the Chinese market, they’ve scaled down to a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine. This smaller Turbomax powertrain, usually seen in GM’s compact U.S. vehicles, now powers the Tahoe.
In China, Chevrolet’s Tahoe comes with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 299 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. This is slightly less powerful than the U.S. version’s 5.3-liter V-8, which has 36 more horsepower. For those seeking higher performance, the U.S. also offers a 6.2-liter V-8 with 121 more horsepower and 91 pound-feet more torque than the four-cylinder. Additionally, the U.S. 3.0-liter Duramax diesel engine offers six more horsepower and a significant torque increase. Chevrolet pairs the Chinese Tahoe’s engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission for reliable and smooth driving.
With a large SUV like the Tahoe, a small engine raises questions about long-term reliability, especially for towing needs. However, GM believes the four-cylinder Turbomax will work well for Chinese buyers, as it’s the sole option for the 2025 model there. Fuel efficiency could also be interesting to watch given the SUV’s size.
The starting price for the Tahoe in China is about RMB 650,000, or just under $90,000, significantly higher than the $60,495 base price in the U.S. However, this Chinese model comes exclusively with 4WD and includes adaptive air suspension, features not available in the entry-level U.S. version.
The Tahoe is offered through The Durant Guild, GM’s premium platform for China, alongside models like the Corvette, Celestiq, and Hummer EV. This platform, launched a couple of years ago, opened its first showroom in Shanghai this summer, with plans for more in major cities by the end of the year.
